Titchwell Marsh Nature Reserve seeks new volunteers for newly renovated cafè

A nature reserve is calling all enthusiasts and community-minded individuals to join a team of volunteers in its newly renovated café.

The café, which opened a fortnight ago at Titchwell Marsh, brings something new to the site, which previously offered a takeaway option only.

Walls have been removed from the kiosk and old seating area, which has created a more open and comfortable eating area.

The renovation also includes a full kitchen installation which now provides an extensive new menu, including several vegetarian and vegan options.

RSPB Titchwell Marsh Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife and a popular day out for locals and tourists visiting the area.

Lynn contractor Chas D. Allflatt Ltd, the oldest construction company in East Anglia, was selected for the café project, spending ten weeks on the refurbishment - which included structural work and a full kitchen refit.

Andy Allflatt, managing director of Chas D. Allflatt Ltd, said: “It was a pleasure working on this project and contributing to the improvement of such a beloved local site, we can see what a huge difference it will make to the reserve and its visitors.”

Clare Garwood, food and beverage manager at RSPB Titchwell Marsh, said: “I’m thrilled that the new café and kitchen installation means we have a more extensive menu including hot breakfast baps, sweet and savoury pastries, traditional jacket potatoes, and a range of homemade cakes.

“I can’t wait to get cooking and baking delicious food and serving our visitors. Volunteers play a major part in the smooth running of the café and I look forward to welcoming more on board.”

Long-term visitor and volunteer Chris Booth praised the new café, saying: “I think the café is just great. After a morning of surveying or birdwatching at Titchwell Marsh, what could be better than a hot cup of coffee and a good breakfast to fill you up ready for the afternoon?”

Terence Lowe, who has also been volunteering in the café for several years, added: “I love the new set-up. It means I have much more interaction with visitors, which is something I really enjoy, and I can’t wait to start making the scones again.”

Summer is a popular time to visit Titchwell Marsh - and calls are therefore being made for more volunteers to come forward.

People interested in supporting the nature reserve can find volunteering roles, including those at the new café, at RSPB Titchwell Marsh.

The café is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm. There is no charge to visit the café, though an entry fee applies to explore the rest of the reserve.
