Hunstanton’s mayor and deputy mayor describe the highlights so far in their roles
A town’s new mayor and deputy mayor have described the highlights since taking up their posts a couple of months ago.
Hunstanton Town Council consists of 17 councillors, who vary from having been in office for just a few months to those who have been involved for years.
Each councillor has a duty to represent the electorate of Hunstanton in an unpaid role.
New mayor of Hunstanton, Cllr Michael Ruston stepped into the role which had previous been filled by Cllr Maureen Howard.
Meanwhile Cllr Adrian Eden, who is the owner of By The Book on the High Street, was elected as deputy mayor in May.
Having spent the last six weeks in office, they described the highlights of their roles so far at a full council meeting on Wednesday.
Cllr Ruston, who has chosen East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) as his charity to support for the year, said: “Since the mayor making in May, a highlight for me has been the two-day carnival in Hunstanton.
“Although it is hard work to organise it is also very fulfilling, particularly with 3,500 visitors across the weekend.”
Cllr Eden added: “A highlight for me was attending a mayoral event at Peterborough Cathedral.
“I take a supportive role to Cllr Ruston to work together and try to take the pressure off the mayor.
“As any councilor I wanted to step up and help to achieve things.
“It has been an honour and a privilege so far to have this role and to benefit the town.”
