Downham Market councillor Josie Ratcliffe to run for South West Norfolk MP seat

A borough councillor has announced that she will be competing against Liz Truss to become South West Norfolk’s next MP.

The South West Norfolk Liberal Democrats have selected borough councillor Josie Ratcliffe to be their parliamentary candidate to take on the Conservatives at the next general election.

Cllr Ratcliffe entered politics in 2019 when she was elected to represent the East Downham ward.

She joins Labour candidate Terry Jermy, who represents Thetford at a district and county level, and independent James Bagge in announcing their intention to run for the seat.

Cllr Ratcliffe said: “I moved to Downham in 2015 and I was disappointed not to hear anything from the local Conservative councillor for four years.

“I knew I could do better at keeping residents informed and helping them with borough council services. So I put myself forward and I was delighted to be elected to represent the council ward I lived in.”

Cllr Ratcliffe worked on the opposition side at the borough council for four years, before being re-elected by residents in 2023.

She subsequently aligned with Independent councillors and others from the Labour and Green groups to form the Independent Partnership that is now running the authority.

Among the issues Cllr Ratcliffe has vowed to tackle are GP and NHS waiting lists, dental woes in West Norfolk, improving Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and helping families by bringing down the cost of energy and food.

She added: “The British people have shown remarkable decency and strength in these very tough times.

“Now, more than even, people deserve a fair deal. I would be honoured to be elected as the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk and I will fight for our community, our businesses and our environment.”
