It’s A Dad’s Life, by Stephenson Smart accountant Neil Gayton

By Lynn News Reporter

I’m told there are stories on what it is like to be a mum pretty much anywhere you look.

My wife often shares with me an amusing anecdote she has read about motherhood, describing it as highly amusing and completely relatable.

So having been asked to write about life as a Dad I feel no pressure whatsoever to give you a side-splitting narrative.

What is about to follow may leave you with a lasting impression.

Probably best I don’t know what that is.

Anyway, my name is Neil Gayton and I live in King’s Lynn.

I’m a triathlete, husband and secret fan of Monopoly. I’m also a dad of two and, unbelievably, I’m still blessed with a full head of hair.

I spend my life transporting my sons, aged seven and nine, to the 9,000 sports clubs they belong to, while explaining that there really isn’t any need to take the six-foot Lego structure they built to the supermarket.

Aside from sporting capabilities, their technological skills are second to none.

Kids these days are like sponges, everything seeps in. Computer games, iPads and the ability to switch the TV over when you thought you had hidden the remote on a high shelf.

I’m often blindsided by their proficiency. But it isn’t always straight forward.

In my spare time I’m a manager at accountancy firm Stephenson Smart in the town, and at present we are guiding our clients through the big change of Making Tax Digital, which comes into effect next month.

The aim is to make tax administration more efficient by implementing a fully digitalised system by 2020. Part of my job is to help people switch to compatible software and support others who find it a more challenging process.

It’s refreshing as they actually listen to me.

Unlike my children who are too busy fighting over a toy from a Christmas cracker neither have played with for three years.
