South West Norfolk MP Terry Jermy quits roles as Breckland district and Norfolk county councillor after more than a decade
A long-serving councillor has quit his role after more than a decade to focus on his new position as an MP.
Terry Jermy, Labour MP for South West Norfolk, has announced he has left his posts at Breckland District Council and Norfolk County Council.
However, he appears to have kept his seat on Thetford Town Council, in his hometown.
It follows his election last July when he beat former Conservative PM Liz Truss at the polls.
He had served as a Breckland district councillor for 14 years and held his Norfolk County Council seat for 12 years.
Mr Jermy said: “It is time to hand over the baton to someone else and focus on my new role as Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk.
“It’s been an honour to represent the place I call home and I thank residents for the opportunity to do so.”
Mr Jermy intended to remain a councillor until the county council elections in May this year to avoid triggering a by-election – which would cost the taxpayer £15,000 – but these have now been deferred due to local government reorganisation.
