Building work on new Lidl in Downham Market gets under way

Building work is finally under way as a new Lidl is constructed in town.

Site work has started as plans to bring the budget supermarket to Downham continue to progress.

Proposals for the Bexwell Road site were given the green light last year, although building work was delayed due to design changes.

Last month, West Norfolk Council planning officers approved proposals for a canopy-mounted illuminated Lidl sign, a flagpole sign, a poster display unit and five wall-mounted billboard, as well as two directional signs.

Now, building work has commenced - and Lidl is advertising for jobs at the shop.

Borough councillor Josie Ratcliffe, who represents the East Downham ward, shared a photograph showing the site, opposite a new care home and next to McDonald’s.

“I've not been able to get a firm timescale for the store opening but I'll follow up as construction progresses,” she said.

“I'm very pleased to see Lidl have started recruitment and these local jobs will be a benefit to the town, in addition to the new choice for grocery shopping.”
