Terrington couple's business is a 'rum do'

Joe and Lisa Melton’s business journey has taken them from an award-winning garden shed to the open road in a colourful tuk-tuk.

The Terrington St Clement couple were featured in the Lynn News a year ago when the bar that they built in their back garden won its category in the Cuprinol Shed of the Year competition.

Inspired by their win – and with the plaque they received as a reminder – they decided that RK2 (rum kitchen number two ) was too good to keep to themselves.

“People said we were crazy trying to set up a business with no money, no loans and no help but we took it one step at a time,” said Lisa.

She explained that they made a few more bars for friends and local businesses at times when lockdown restrictions were eased and things really looked up when they fitted out a gin distillery and retail shop in Peterborough.

Unable to get out to boost the business, they went into online sales of gifts and rum including UK distilled rum taster kits.

Lisa said: “We offer four premium rums and four mixers with cocktail suggestions and ideas on flavours.

“And we have others up our sleeve. We would also like to produce our own rum one day.

“We have been working closely with UK rum companies from Scotland to Devon and in between, receiving valuable advice and information from a Norfolk distiller.”

Next came the tuk-tuk – a 1980s Piaggio which they have upcycled to use as a rum bar and for other sales projects.

They used it early on to serve teas and coffees at a local football match and then took it to Holt market to sell their taster kits and rum varieties.

“We are back at Holt this week and want to get out to festivals, events and more markets,” said Lisa.

“It is not easy because so many markets are fully booked but we are keen to hear from anyone with ideas or events we can attend. And it doesn’t have to be just for rum.

“We will also do corporate and private garden parties, fundraisers, sporting/music events, food and drink festivals, celebrations – there really isn’t much we wouldn’t be interested in doing.

“You can also hire our tuk-tuk. If you sell jewellery, gifts, cakes for instance, you can hire just the tuk-tuk to showcase your items with a real wow factor.”
