A10 at Downham Market to be closed on various dates for Norfolk County Council redressing works

A key road will be closed on a number of dates to allow for resurfacing work.

Work on the A10 eastern bypass at Downham is due to start on Friday, May 3, Norfolk County Council has confirmed.

To allow the work to be carried out safely and swiftly, the authority says it will be necessary to close the road to through traffic on a number of dates when the surfacing is under way.

It will involve line painting being carried out, while the cat’s eyes (road studs) are also being renewed. Access to properties will be maintained at all times.

The work, which is weather-dependant, will be carried out in phases, with any road closures only in place for a number of hours at a time on the following dates:

- May 3-5: Stud removal - 7pm-6am. Scheduled for May 3 but allowance for unsuitable weather.

May 29-31: First dressing - 7pm-6am. Scheduled for May 29 but allowance for unsuitable weather.

June 5-7: Second dressing - 7pm-6am. Scheduled for June 5 but allowance for unsuitable weather.

June 17-19: Lining / studs - 7pm-6am. Scheduled for June 17 but allowance for unsuitable weather.

A fully signed diversion route will be in operation for the duration of the works. The county council has thanked people for their patience while the essential road maintenance work is carried out.

The work is part of the council’s annual redressing programme.

This involves a new seal being placed, consisting of a thin layer of bitumen and chippings which is laid onto the road. This helps prevent water penetration and helps stop potholes opening up.

Vehicles passing over the new surface play an important part in helping the new surface to settle in.

People are urged to drive slowly across the new surface until it is bedded in and highway teams return a few days later to sweep up the loose stones.
