Taster sessions are to be held in Lynn later this month for people interested in becoming full-time firefighters.

Applications for the latest round of recruitment are due to open in August.

But, before that, would-be recruits are being given the chance to get an insight into the job during two training evenings to be held at the Lynn north station on Kilhams Way.

Margaret Dewsbury, chairman of the Norfolk County Council communities committee, which oversees the fire service, said: “The work of the modern firefighter is much more varied than just tackling blazes.

"Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is committed to keeping our county safe. The firefighters assist with rescuing people and animals from a wide variety of situations, responding to flood and storm threats, providing emergency medical care and educating the public on fire safety. It’s certainly not your average nine to five job.

“We particularly welcome applications from groups that are currently under represented in the service.

"At present, there is a shortage of women in the service and people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.”

The taster sessions will take place on June 26 and 27, both between 6 and 9pm.

Anyone interested in attending should visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/safety/norfolk-fire-and-rescue-service/recruitment/becoming-a-firefighter for more details and to complete an expression of interest form.
