King's Lynn mum-of-two launches new Covid-safe outdoor children's library
A mother-of-two was inspired to create a covid-safe outdoor library for youngsters in Lynn to keep up with their reading during lockdown.
Emily Fitch launched her Blue Door Borrowers outside her home near the College of West Anglia in Tennyson Avenue last weekend.
She said: "During the first lockdown there was a real excitement to help others, but now everyone seems fed up.
"Living on a busy street, it's hard to get that community spirit but I wanted to try and bring it back by helping as many children as I can."
She added: "As adults, we can still get out to do the weekly shop but children are either stuck at home or doing the same walks.
"Some haven’t been at school for nearly 10 weeks and they haven’t had the chance to see friends."
The primary school worker is mother to two-year-old June, and nine-year-old Ethan. "I’m just so passionate about getting children out and getting them to have some sense of normal," she said.
"Ethan was so excited and has already borrowed some books to read, he hopes his friends will come and borrow some too."
With World Book Day on Thursday, Emily is encouraging Lynn families to take a walk to Tennyson Avenue to find the house with the blue door and borrow a book.
She said: "Every year we get so excited for World Book Day but this year the kids won't be at school and the library’s are closed until at least April 12.
"I wanted children to be able to still read and get out out the house - for something for them to get a book, explore the outdoors and be social by talking about what they have done."
She added: "Going out to buy books is just another expense right now, so why not share books with other families? I have had lots of people donate books which has been incredible and I am so grateful."
If anyone would like to donate books, visit the Blue Door Borrowers and pop them into the Quarantine Box, hand gel is also provided to ensure safety.
The Blue Door Borrowers is open all day on Saturdays and Sundays, plus late afternoons during the week.
