A North Lynn woman died in hospital after developing an infection following heart surgery.

A narrative conclusion was recorded at an inquest into the death of Sandra Hammond-Grant in Lynn yesterday.

But members of her family were urged to seek talks with doctors after they expresed concerns about the nature of her care.

The court heard Mrs Hammond-Grant, 54, died in Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital on January 17 this year.

She had been admitted three days earlier suffering with an infection developed following heart surgery at the Papworth Hospital in December.

Members of Mrs Hammond-Grant’s family said they had been surprised at the speed of her discharge following the surgery, pointing out she had remained in hospital for a month after a similar procedure in 2009.

Area coroner Yvonne Blake advised them to seek a meeting with Papworth staff, as no medical professionals had been called to the hearing to give evidence.

However, a statement made by Ravi Joseph da Silva, the surgeon who carried out the operations, said Mrs Hammond-Grant had made an “excellent” recovery and was not showing any signs of infection when she was discharged.
