Terry Jermy calls for South West Norfolk schools to apply for Labour’s free breakfast club scheme

Terry Jermy is calling for schools to take advantage of the government’s free breakfast club scheme saying it will make a “huge difference to children”.

The South West Norfolk MP has backed Labour’s push to fund early adopters of its universal free breakfast club rollout set to be offered to primary schools from April next year.

Under the new plans, which saw an investment of £33 million, parents will be eligible for free childcare for 30 minutes at the start of each school day, with their kids being offered a healthy breakfast to prevent hunger that could otherwise impede their ability to learn.

Mr Jermy has written to schools in the area to urge them to apply.

“Speaking to parents in the constituency, I know how valuable getting help with childcare around the school day can be – these clubs could save local families £400 a year,” he said.

“At the same time, the clubs will help to deliver Labour’s mission to break down the barriers to opportunity for children by boosting attendance and attainment.”

The MP added that he hopes schools in South West Norfolk can help shape the future of national breakfast clubs by being some of the first to take on the initiative.
