Last round for town bowls club

A Downham sports club will meet for the last time this evening after members decided to disband due to falling numbers.

The Downham Short Mat Bowls Club, which has been running for the past two decades and had dozens of members at its peak, met at the town’s leisure centre in Bexwell Road.

But officials say tonight’s session will be its last, after only five people opted to remain as members following their renewal period last month.

A club spokesman said this week: “Due to a declining membership, the continuation of the club`s activities is no longer viable.

“The decision was made at a recent meeting of remaining members to cease activities with effect from February 14.

“We would like to thank all who have supported the club over the past 20 years.”

The club says it will donate its equipment, much of which was financed by a grant from the Norfolk Community Fund, to the centre.

Short mat clubs continue to operate in Denver and Wimbotsham.
