King's Lynn guildhall presents opportunity to raise town's profile, Lynn News letters

By Lynn News Reporter

Scholarly research which indicates that it is very likely that Shakespeare performed in the Guildhall in 1592 (in addition to the fact that the Guildhall is the oldest theatre in the UK, in use since 1422) presents an unrivalled opportunity to raise the national and international profile of King’s Lynn.

How absolutely extraordinary, therefore, that Councillor Elizabeth Nockolds, deputy leader and responsible for Culture and Heritage, should claim “there is no evidence that Shakespeare appeared at the Guildhall”.

Devaluing well-founded research that could enhance national and international interest in Lynn, thus increase tourism and provide considerable local benefit, is no way to support the borough of King’s Lynn.

The newly-formed Shakespeare Guildhall Trust should be warmly welcomed, and energetically supported, for its initiative in promoting this proud legacy.
