Let's hope Harry and Meghan spread joy

I saw that they were very happy and I will pray that their happiness lasts forever and they will together spread their joy to others, especially to those whose lives have been made miserable by this government – the homeless, the under-waged, the mentally ill, those who are abused and exploited, those in war zones.

I hope they use their privileged position to champion those which our capitalist imperialist social hierarchy deem as expendable. I have every hope.

One issue did strike me was that Mr Windsor wore military uniform.

Now, there is a light and dark side to this symbolic gesture. On the one hand, the light, it was a tribute to those young people who train and fight for the defence of the realm. These people sacrifice a lot of their lives to prepare for any threat and nobody, not even a pacifist like myself, should subject them to any ridicule. However, the dark side is that we still rely on the military to impose our neo-liberal, capitalist imperialism on the world.

The true values of a mature society are peace and justice. When I go abroad and show my passport, I would one day hope that my British passport would not just represent my ‘nationality’ but that here was someone working for peace and justice. To some extent it still does, for instance, despite creeping privatisation, the values of the NHS.

Best wishes to the Happy Couple.
