Guards are needed on trains from King's Lynn, Lynn News, Letters

I am not a commuter but do travel on the King’s Lynn to King’s Cross railway line a fair bit, particularly during the football season. I want to see a guard or ticket inspector on every train, not now and again as is the case these days. The question is, what if somebody becomes ill or has a heart attack? It is not acceptable to have driver-only operated trains and I fully support the RMT union over their stance on this. Last October I went to a meeting in Norwich about the railways being re-nationalised and spoke to shadow chancellor John McDonnell after the meeting and he said transport secretary Chris Grayling just will not listen on the issue of driver-only operated trains and re-nationalisation in general.

He was a failure as prison officers’ minister and has become known as “failing Grayling”.

Secondly, our welfare state that was set up as a safety net against people becoming destitute and homeless which unfortunately because of the system in this country we have seen far too much of. We probably know people who do not want to work but we need to have a good welfare state that supports people at the bottom of society. There are not jobs for everyone in this country and you should be realistic, Mr McDonnell.

The problems with society, and have been since the Thatcher governments, are greed at the top. We should have a cap on top pay between £100,000 to £150,000 a year.
