Letter: S Mackinder November 21, 2017
The letters on your Viewpoint pages involving supposedly ‘incoherent rants’ aren’t the cuppa tea of Anne Bolton and she wishes that the writers would take the trouble to meet up with their detractors ‘mano a mano’ and slug it out without recourse to relentlessly writing to the Lynn News with the same old dross.
Well she may have a point and certainly her views this time have passed the Editor’s scrutiny and arrived intact and printed in Friday’s paper. However, in defence of the right of the more ‘rabid’ contributors to air their knowledge and prejudices within these jolly pages I’d like to express my own opinion that I’m far happier reading the incoherent rants in this paper than being subjected to endless bland and bloodless entries bleating about late trains or overflowing dog poo bins and their ilk.
The Lynn News undoubtedly has, within its readership, more than its fair share of political dinosaurs and tub-thumpers as well as a few psuedo-intellectuals desperate to air their knowledge and deliver their disdain for the lower orders from the comfort of ivory towers. But there you go – we’ve all got to hail from somewhere, Ann.
If you’re not happy with the status quo you could try flicking past the dreaded Viewpoint pages or, dare I suggest, get a newspaper that reflects your need for less challenging entries from its readers?
As massively annoying as I find certain contributions to the letters page,I will support their efforts despite the heightened risk of having my own contribution critically analysed for accuracy, consistency and grammar even.
