Thank you to Sir Henry Bellingham
Countless West Norfolk people will have their own special memories of his genuine efforts to help them, in all kinds of ways. We marvel at the way he somehow found time to reply to so many demands for his help and intervention.
And he had a remarkable recall of people’s names and situations. Without questions, he took his role as our MP seriously and yet with good humour.
Of course, no one person can please everyone all the time and even successful people are sometimes limited in what they can do but men and women of true character will always make a difference.
And Sir Henry certainly did make a difference to our lives. Two major examples of this help illustrate this. First, it should be recorded that he was one of the key figures who ensured that the Lynn to London railway line was electrified in the 1990’s. This was critical, as it ensured the future of the line and this regular service is now vital to the West Norfolk economy.
Secondly, his courageous stand against the incinerator and even against his own party at County Hall, was a key factor in the defeat of the scheme.
One of the things I really admire about Sir Henry is thathe has succeeded in getting a balance between his position of privilege and living out a life oftrue service to our community. For 36 years he has brought great dedication and sacrifice to his determination to make a difference.
And perhaps one of the most endearing ways he was won our affection is the way he has genuinely tried to help the whole community in West Norfolk, rich and poor, young and old alike. His courtesy is always a mark of his dealings with any group or individual.
He is a true gentleman. The fact that he has been our MP for nearly four decades is a tremendous achievement and speaks for itself. On a personal level, Sir Henry, Frances and I want to thank you for thegenuine care, compassion and help you have shown us over many, many years and we warmly wish you success forthe future.
Sheridan and Frances Payne,
Wisbech Road, Lynn
