The person earning over £50,000 will be parting with around 50% of his entire income and national insurance to the Treasury in taxes whereas your less well-off person is likely to be contributing little or nothing as they are near the tax free threshold.

You should show a little more gratitude to our £50k earners because without the revenue from those taxes the social infrastructure would be in a bigger hole than it is currently.
