Letter: Steve Mackinder October 17, 2017
So, the much-vaunted and loudly trumpeted job opportunities celebrated by Liz Truss when her “Make it Marham” campaign finally came to fruition must be ringing a little hollow after BAE Systems announced that 200 plus people working at Marham need to start looking for another job as they are now surplus to requirements.
As we all know this rural part of the UK isn’t exactly flush with job opportunities for aerospace engineers and I’m pretty sure all these unlucky people will be forced to up sticks and cart their little families to whatever part of the country might provide a new job, if at all!
I’d like to think Liz will be offering considerably more than just the standard empty promises she’s proffered so far to her constituents.
Her ‘default setting’ of chirpily declaring her routinely vacuous and positive spin on this disaster cuts no ice with me and my guess is this “minor setback” for a trifling handful of people will soon be swept under the carpet and we can all get back to business as usual once the dust settles.
Again we are being fed the message that the arrival of the super-noisy F45 Lightnings will bring untold numbers of super-jobs to the area, which is great except the chances are very few people round here will have the skills to take on these roles and another tranche of incomers will descend upon us to garner up the riches generated by the need to service and maintain these vile war machines.
Hopefully Liz will be able to offer West Norfolk residents some real solutions for these freshly unemployed people but in the meantime I’ll put my ear defenders back on now that they relaid the Tarmac on the Marham runways and the flyboys can return to carving massive corridors of noise over my village morning, noon and night!
