Lightning leaves trail of damage as rain arrives in West Norfolk

The heatwave ended in spectacular style as violent storms hit West Norfolk on Friday.

Old Hunstanton Lighthouse was damaged by a lightening bolt in Friday night’s thunderstorm, leaving a V-shaped gap in the 18th-century building’s roof.

Units from Hunstanton and Heacham were called to the scene at around 6am to isolate the electricity and make the area safe.

Other incidents including ceiling damage at Fakenham furniture store, Aldiss.

A spokesman from Aldiss said: “It was originally described as the roof had caved in, but this isn’t quite what happened.

“What has been described as happening is a bit over the top.

“Basically, a guttering overflowed and water came through the celling tiles.

“There was furniture underneath this section of celling and staff worked quickly to move it all out the way and clean up the area.

“We were cleaned up and open again for 9am on Saturday. Staff worked very quickly and efficiently.

“It looked a lot worse than it actually was because celling damage always makes a mess and looks bad.”
