Locals divided as McDonald's and Starbucks construction starts in Downham Market
Construction has begun on the site of new branches for McDonalds and Starbucks on the edge of Downham.
The project on an area of land near the Bexwell roundabout was given the go-ahead by West Norfolk Council last summer.
Many local residents were opposed to the scheme because of what they fear as the potential impact on neighbouring residents and wildlife.
A Downham resident has said on Facebook: "A lot of people say the area is an eyesore but it is home to deer and other species of wildlife."
Fears have also been expressed about road safety.
However, several people have expressed excitement at the project.
One local said: “It’s about time Downham had facilities like this, especially for fast food and good coffee."
