All our yesterdays: June flashbacks from Sandringham, King’s Lynn, Downham Market and Heacham
In our weekly look through back issues of the Lynn News, we revisit 2011, 2012 and 2015 for our All Our Yesterdays feature…
June 2011: All aboard! Walkers join the National Autistic Society’s train walk at Sandringham, led by the “Fat Controller” Gary Tuttle. The sponsored Thomas & Friends fancy dress walk saw local families and friends in a long walking train and they raised between £300 and £400.
June 2011: Wally Glynn and Jazmin Williams were part of the Fairstead Community Centre team at the successful Lions Fun Day held at Lynn Walks. It was the 13th year the event had been held and 50 charity stalls were involved and also a friendly dog show which attracted 180 entrants.
June 2011: Sorellas were out in force for the Downham Market Summer Ball wild west disco and barbecue, which was a feature of the Downham Festival. Rain forced the cancellation of some outside activities, but overall the festival was voted another great success.
June 2012: Some glum faces from children, staff and parents after hearing that their Tom Thumb Day Care centre, based in Marsh House, Gaywood, faced closure, as county council chiefs say they plan to sell the building.
June 2012: North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham joins campaigners in canvassing support in Lynn town centre as the protests continue against the proposed incinerator at Saddlebow.
June 2012: Artists from 11 West Norfolk groups took part in the art club competition held at Henderson Art and Framing in Gaywood. West Norfolk’s deputy mayor, Garry Sandell (back third from left) meets some of the exhibitors.
June 2015: A group of Year 5 musical students from St Martha’s Primary School in Lynn – going under the name of Ukulear Power – were preparing to open the Norfolk youth arts festival, to be held at The Forum in Norwich. St Martha’s was the only primary school to perform at the event.
June 2015: Joust a minute – a medieval confrontation at Lynn during a weekend of celebrations to mark the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. More than 800 people visited Lynn Museum and hundreds more flocked to the Tuesday Market Place to step back in time.
June 2015: Hundreds of pupils from Lynn’s Springwood High School took part in the school’s annual opportunities event, with a number of different employment sectors represented.
June 2015: Heacham’s Youth and Community Trust charity shop, in the High Street, was officially opened by West Norfolk borough mayor and mayoress Colin and Julie Manning. They are pictured with, from left, trustee David and volunteer Lydia Page and trust chairman Mick Jennings.
June 2015: Members of the Armed Forces were honoured and celebrated by members of Fakenham Air Cadets as part of the annual Armed Forces Week. Pictured here they took part in a remembrance parade in the town.
