As I write we are in the middle of some very strange, unprecedented times.

My usual ramblings are taking a back seat this month because nothing is really the same as it was. And like everybody else we, as a family, are taking each day as it comes and trying to navigate our way through the best that we can.

My wife and I are both working from home and doing our utmost to home school the boys.

I’m learning a lot and my respect for teachers has been taken to a new level. How they teach a class of 30 children and get them all to pay attention is beyond me.

Although (and I say this with my fingers crossed), so far the boys are doing really well and I might even go as far to say, surprisingly harmonious.

No-one has had a strop, there have been no fights over Lego or computers and thank god for Joe Wicks keeping everyone’s fitness in check.

As an accountant I now find myself giving out advice on subjects and schemes that we haven’t had to consider before.

Our clients quite understandably have many questions that we need to answer as the landscape shifts on what seems like a daily basis.

Up until a few weeks ago no-one had really heard of the term furloughing, and now it’s a word on everyone’s lips and how it relates to the job retention scheme.

There’s also questions about business rates, loans, statutory sick pay and self-assessment payment referrals, all of which we are here to answer and support people with.

We have a comprehensive guide on our website at Stephenson Smart, which should hopefully help.

Our offices may be shut, but we are still collecting records from people by a secure portal and I guess if anything, now is a good time to get on top of finances.

Our finances, and more importantly our health are the things we must protect more than ever.

Wishing everyone all the best and please stay safe.
