Captain Fawcett Ltd in King's Lynn invests thousands and launches new products in its tenth anniversary year

A Lynn company is this year investing tens of thousands of pounds in launching new products and extending its global markets to coincide with its tenth anniversary.

Captain Fawcett Ltd, on Lynn's Hardwick Narrows Estate was set up by Richie Finney, whose journey into the world of manufacturing men's grooming items originated in his kitchen making moustache wax.

In the past ten years, the company has created 165 products which are sold in more than 40 countries. Last year, Richie was named Business Person of the Year and his company was awarded the Small Business of the Year title in the Mayor's Business Awards.

Over the next year he is investing £160,000 to develop and manufacture new products. He said: "These are hugely exciting times, we have ten years' experience behind us and the time is absolutely right.

"Usually I try to bring out a couple of products each year, but this year is different and I will bring one out every month. This will include items such as shampoos, shower gels and moisturisers.

"We have created a brand with a worldwide following and we already have an audience."

Last month Captain Fawcett added more items to its range, Debonair Moustache Wax in collaboration with The Chap magazine, and, with The Jodhpur Company, its Maharajah signature series with a selection of beard balm, moustache wax and beard oils.

The outlay for the manufacture and launch of both of these amounts to around £22,000.

Previously Richie has worked in collaboration with others to bring out signature series, such as Rufus Hound, Ricki Hall and Sid Sottung for the Barberism range.

"When we do a signature series, it's important to have audience. I work with different demographics, rather than have all my eggs in one basket," he said.

He is looking to expand his global market imminently by adding two more countries to his export list, India and Japan.

He said: "India is a huge growth market. It is country where taking care of facial hair is a great tradition. Japan is another country which has enormous potential. We have already met a would-be distributor."

On the down side, the outbreak of coronavirus has thwarted his plans to exhibit at two major international events this month, the leading trade fair for hairdressing industry, Top Hair in Dusseldorf, Germany, and the world's largest international exhibition of perfumery and cosmetics, Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna, in Italy.

"It's been a blow and has cost us some thousands," said Richie, who has trips planned for Pakistan and India in April, with more overseas visits in the pipeline.
