Lynn News' charity of the year 8:56 Foundation share their fundraising challenges
The Lynn News' charity of the year, the 8:56 Foundation are encouraging sporting challenges this summer to help fundraise for the organisation that supports men's mental health.
Events will include running several distances for differing abilities, plus the opportunity to take part in their second Men's Time event playing foot-golf following the success of their bowling event at Strikes in Lynn.
The foundation was set up in memory of Lee Calton and is named after the time of the train his group of friends would take to set off and watch the Linnets matches.
Trustee Lee Smith, professor of public health at Anglia Ruskin University said: "Our running group, Team 856, have a July challenge for everyone.
"We are asking all members to run 25, 50 or 75Km during the month, sharing photos and tips along the way, in preparation for the Team856 Peterborough Half Marathon in October, which will be to raise funds for the foundation.
"Donations can be made at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/team856halfmarathon
"Team856 was formed as a result of the fantastic response we had to the Grand East Anglia Run (Recipharm GEAR 10k) in May, bringing people together through running to improve mental health and well-being.
"The group can be found on Facebook and everyone is welcome to join.
"On Sunday July 3, we also see our second 8:56 Men’s Time event.
"We are over at Eagles Golf Centre in Tilney playing foot-golf and this can be booked through our website https://856foundation.org.uk/.
"It is aimed at reducing the risk of isolation and loneliness in the community through a sporting social activity.
"Further events are planned around bowls, fishing and snooker before the year end.
"We attended the Windsor Road Jubilee street party on Sunday, June 5 and it was a fantastic day supported by the local area with Zane the Corgi being won.
"It was great to meet so many people and talk about the foundation’s work and aims.
"We would like to thank the Orb and Sceptre for raising some £380 at a recent fundraising quiz held on behalf of the 8:56 Foundation."
