Library - oppose move to ugly Argos
Well done councillor Alexandra Kemp in speaking up for the ordinary people of Lynn (Lynn News, December 3) by opposing the proposed move of the town library. This whole move is questionable, on many grounds.
My first impression is the dubious way the consultation has been conducted.
It seems that a powerful minority of officials have taken it upon themselves to frame a consultation that is heavily weighted towards the move.
I took part in the online consultation but I felt cheated that there was no proper opportunity to strongly disagree with the move and there was no alternative opportunity whatever to support the development of the library in its existing building.
In other words, it seems a foregone conclusion to the proposers that the library will move, which is not consulting at all! And look at the proposal.
Moving from a beautiful purpose-built historic building in the heart of town to the Argos building, of all places!
The Argos building is surely one of the most ugly, faceless and soulless buildings in Lynn.
You couldn’t have a greater contrast. It would take millions to refurbish properly and still wouldn’t match the beauty and tranquillity of the Carnegie building.
The present library is already a very useful hub in the community, in all kinds of ways.
And there is an unused car park next door to the Carnegie that could be used for a useful extension.
Surely some of the Town Fund Deal money could be used on that? The Town Deal is a wonderful opportunity to develop Lynn in these difficult times and there are some really great projects that have been proposed, especially for the Shakespeare Guildhall and the Waterfront.
But this proposed move of the library from its wonderful location would be a backward step, unworthy of our historic town.
