Man arrested after 1 million illegal cigarettes are seized in King's Lynn raids
A man has been arrested and bailed after a million illegal cigarettes were seized during raids across Lynn yesterday.
Several sites in London Road and Norfolk Street were searched during the joint operation by police and Trading Standards officers.
Officers say the seized cigarettes have an estimated street value of around £500,000. A large quantity of cash was also recovered.
A 37-year-old man was arrested in connection with the finds and questioned at the Lynn police investigation centre. He has since been released under investigation.
The raids follow a joint investigation into the sale of illegal tobacco products.
West Norfolk police commander, Supt Dave Buckley, said: "This result highlights our commitment to work with partners to target criminal activity, including those involved in organised crime."
Margaret Dewsbury, Chairman of Norfolk County Council’s Communities committee, which oversees the work of Trading Standards, added: "The raids are part of our ongoing campaign, working with partners, to tackle the supply of illegal tobacco in Norfolk.
"The people that sell illegal tobacco put our youngest residents at risk because they are selling harmful goods at ‘pocket money’ prices. Sellers of illegal tobacco may be involved in other criminal activity, including organised crime.
"Hopefully these raids will raise awareness about our campaign and we would encourage Norfolk residents to come forward with any information they may have about illegal tobacco sold in their communities.
"Norfolk County Council Trading Standards are always ready to respond to any intelligence they receive."
