A 43-year-old man has told a court he doesn’t know why he stole a microwave oven from a Swaffham shop.

Staff at QD Stores checked CCTV images after noticing the Beko product was missing from the shelf display.

Aaron McKillop was arrested and accepted it was him seen removing the item on September 4 last year.

Appearing before magistrates in Lynn on Thursday, he pleaded guilty to theft. The court heard he had 237 offences on his record.

Solicitor Claire Edgeler, mitigating, said the number of convictions had “plummeted” recently after McKillop had made “concerted efforts” to address his drug problem.

“This offence, to his great shame, occurred when he had met up with some people not of the right persuasion,” she added.

“He says he doesn’t usually drink. He doesn’t remember why he took the microwave or what he did with it.”

McKillop, of Gills Close, Sporle, was fined £120 and ordered to pay £69.99 compensation plus a £34 victim surcharge.
