Man caught driving van in King's Lynn's Scania Way he bought to sleep in while disqualified
A former Fairstead man bought a van to sleep in - and was caught driving it while disqualified.
Jacob Norman was about to be evicted from his home in Elizabeth Court and bought the Ford Transit to have a mattress in the back.
However, police pulled him over in Scania Way on May 28 after getting a tip-off that the driver might be uninsured.
That proved correct because Norman, 31, was serving a four-year ban.
He had been convicted of drink-driving in 2018, Lynn Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday.
The vehicle was seized after Norman admitted to police that he knew he was banned and therefore not insured either.
He pleaded guilty to both offences in court.
In light of those pleas, the prosecution withdrew another charge of a tyre having insufficient tread.
Andrew Cogan, mitigating, said: “He was driving really out of desperation.
“He was invited to leave [his home in Elizabeth Court] in no uncertain terms.”
Mr Cogan said his client bought the van to park on the drive of Norman’s mother’s home in Mickley Green, Whepstead, Suffolk – which is his address now.
“It was that or he was going to have to sleep on the streets,” added Mr Cogan.
Norman was banned for three months, fined £120 and ordered to pay £84 in costs and victim surcharge.
