A man who stole goods from a Swaffham supermarket earlier this month has been jailed for 60 days.

Michael Brown, 39, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to a single charge of burglary when he appeared before Norwich magistrates on Saturday.

The case related to an incident at the Asda store in Lynn Street, Swaffham, which was reported in the early hours of last Friday, June 1.

A police dog unit was called in and traced the stolen property to a house in Orchard Place where Brown was detained.

Police say that, when interviewed, Brown admitted to staying inside the store after it had closed by hiding in the bakery. He then went on to steal cigarettes and toiletries before using a fire extinguisher to break out of the locked store which triggered the alarm.

As well as his prison term, Brown was ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that a second man arrested at the same time as Brown was released without charge. The items stolen in the raid were all recovered.
