King's Lynn man stole Yankee candles and hair grips worth £58 from Poundland store
A reformed drug addict had a “blip” and stole candles and hair clips to sell on.
Daniel Ford has been clean for four years, magistrates in Lynn were told on Thursday.
He stole five Yankee candles and five packs of hair grips worth £58 from the town’s Poundland store on July 23.
The items were recovered by police officers who searched Ford as he headed towards North Lynn.
Eventually they were traced to Poundland and CCTV was reviewed showing the theft taking place.
Police then went to Ford’s home to arrest him.
In court, he pleaded guilty to theft.
Solicitor George Sorrell said in mitigation: “He’s the first one to know that, with a record like his, he really shouldn’t be behaving like this.”
Mr Sorrell said Ford had found himself in money trouble after losing his job at a Wormegay factory and not being able to get a crisis loan.
“In a state of desperation, he stole these items. He would’ve got perhaps £20 for them,” the solicitor added before referring to Ford’s former 18-year heroin addiction.
“He really has transformed his life and it’s a pity this blip should have occurred.”
Ford, of Pilot Street, Lynn, was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £62 in costs and victim surcharge.
