Matron Claire has devoted 33 years to NHS

While health workers commemorate 70 years of the NHS, one Lynn nurse is celebrating completing 33 years service.

Claire Kent, 52, who works as a matron and deputy associate chief nurse at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, has been a part of the health sector for almost half the time it has been running.

Ms Kent underwent three years nursing training before securing her first role within the accident and emergency department.

She said: “In those days there was no nursing shortages and there was fierce competition for jobs in the areas we wanted to work.

“I really enjoyed it in A&E, the mix of people, the variety of work and the fact we had a really good team. I was well supported as a junior member of it.”

In the last few years Ms Kent has been away from the trust to other organisations on two secondments, to United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust as deputy chief nurse and the NHS England Midlands and Eastern Region as patient experience lead.

Both gave her insights into how other organisations work and the chance to develop new skills and bring them back to Lynn.

She added: “Although the bulk of my career has been at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, I’ve always seen it as really important to look outside of the organisation.”
