In our weekly All Our Yesterdays feature, we look back through the pages of old editions of the Lynn News for May memories in 2011, 2012 and 2014…
May 2012: The King’s Morris take part in their traditional May Day parade, taking the May Garland through Lynn town centre. The parading of the garland is an ancient tradition revived by the King’s Morris in 1983.
May 2012: As his year in office came to an end, West Norfolk’s mayor Colin Sampson, receives an official mayoral portrait from Lynn News photographer Paul Tibbs.
May 2012: A dozen youngsters complete with their own Super Hero capes took centre stage at Lynn Town Hall Assembly Rooms for the King’s Lynn Speedway Study Centre presentation evening. The children from Highgate, North Wootton and South Wootton schools were congratulated by Borough Mayor Colin Sampson. Also pictured at the back are Carrie Read (Stars study centre), speedway promoter Keith Chapman, Anne Gardner (Stars study centre), Nathan Hollands and Borough Mayoress Susan Sampson.
May 2012: Historian Alison Gifford with a plaque in The Walks at Lynn – at a area known as Gallows Hill – marking the site where a group of pirates were hanged centuries ago. Alison had written the description on the plaque.
May 2012: Pictured at West Norfolk Flower Club’s diamond jubilee lunch are Margaret Woodford (left) the club chairman, cutting the cake with Jean Fox, the longest serving club member.
May 2014: Securing almost £10,000 Lottery funding to refurbish South Wootton pre-school’s outside play area was a great excuse for a May Day fayre. Pictured at the official opening is South Wootton Parish Council chairman David Price (centre) and Jane Curtis (far right) the pre-school manager.
May 2014: Preparing for the annual Cancer Research UK Race for Life at Houghton Hall are Emma Todd-Ward, the official starter of the event, joined by Rachel Parrat (KLRFL), Laura Gathercole (Tesco), Tim Carr (KLRFL).
May 2014: Youngsters from Lynn primary schools Eastgate and St Edmund’s took part in the anti-racism campaign led by footballers Steve Kabba (front second right) and Osei Sankofa. They are joined by, from left, event organiser PC Natalie Garrard, Benjamin Simpkins (Eastgate School), Viktoras Versinskas (St Edmund’s School), and Bob Casey (Youth Advisory board member).
May 2014: Olympics 10,000m runner Paul Evans passed on his experience to youngsters of Downham Academy ahead of the popular Downham Games event.
May 2011: Pupils from Sandringham and West Newton Church of England School were inspired at Lynn Arts Centre to take part in art-based activities – here putting colours on paper and creating patterns by blowing through a straw. From left: Noah Battelley, Teddy Adams and Nathan Taylor.
