Downham Market mayor lights the beacon in cherry-picker for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations

Crowds gathered at St Edmund's church in Downham last night to see the beacon lit in honour of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The town's newly elected mayor Charlie Pyatt got into a cherry-picker to light the beacon at 9.45pm, as church bells rang.

The striking scene, seeing the mayor donning a bright yellow safety hat with goggles, was cast against an idyllic sunset at one of Downham's highest points.

The church itself was lit up, with the choir singing below.

As the Mr Pyatt ascended the town crier let the town know that they had four minutes to wait.

He said: "We've got four minutes to go, but it's not our fault, it's her majesty's and she's allowed to make us wait!"

The crowd cheered as the fire was lit with cries of "God save the Queen!"
