Downham Market town councillors urged to help out more at council-run events

Councillors were urged by their mayor to step up and help out at more events.

The six councillors who attended last week’s meeting at Downham Town Council were reminded by Mayor Barry Hobbs that their help is required at council-run events in the town.

He thanked councillors who attended the recent gingerbread event that was put on for children at the town hall, as well as those who came to the open mic night.

However, Cllr Hobbs added: “There was an absence of councillors. We need councillors and volunteers to run these events.

“I appreciate those who work full time and it is difficult. I am sure we could do better than we are at the moment.”

This came before councillors were updated on some of the upcoming events happening across April, May and June in the town. However, the council decided to defer confirming the attendance due to the lack of councillors present at the meeting on Tuesday evening.

Events coming up include the town’s annual St Winnold’s Day parade, a music bingo, another open mic night and a VE Day anniversary beacon lighting.

Cllr Hobbs added that the gingerbread event was a success and that more than 120 children attended.
