Mothballed Sutton Bridge power station could be contracted out by industrial firms

A mothballed power station could be contracted out by industrial firms, according to a website.

Sutton Bridge Power Station has laid dormant for over a year after its owners Calon Energy went into administration.

But now UK Power Plants is inviting companies to contract Sutton Bridge and Severn Power Plants.

We did approach UK Power Plants for comment.

The website states: “Industrial companies and energy suppliers: if you need clean, reliable electricity, Severn and Sutton Bridge combined cycle power plants can be contracted for less than 1.8 pence per kilowatt-hour per year (plus fuel and carbon costs).

“Due to the UK’s energy market structure, Severn and Sutton Bridge operated at substantial losses for years before ultimately entering administration in June 2020. The plants could no longer afford to provide reliable electricity for the people of the UK and, in August 2020, were forced to enter an indefinite non-operational (“mothball”) state.

“Despite the recent extreme volatility in the UK energy market, the plants have not been contracted and remain in an idle state. Having exited administration in March 2021, Severn and Sutton can be contracted for less than 1.8 pence per kilowatt-hour per year (plus fuel and carbon costs).”

The Sutton Bridge site was commissioned in 1999 at a cost of £337 million with a £45 million upgrade taking place in 2016.

The gas fuelled power station has a maximum capacity of 850 MW.

In March this year, Calon Energy exited administration via a Company Voluntary Agreement and control was handed back to its directors - listed on Companies House as Jeffrey Holder and Scott Magie.

South Holland district councillor Michael Booth wants to see it used. He said: “I would be very pleased to see it brought back into use especially as we have a big problem with energy.

“It doesn’t want to be sat there decommissioned forever and a day when it could make a difference.I believe it is right that it is should be used.”
