Great Cressingham family narrowly escaped car fire at Tesco supermarket in Swaffham

A mother and her four children narrowly avoided catastrophe when their car was incinerated after catching fire in a supermarket car park.

Bex Whitley had driven to Brocks Road in Swaffham last Thursday to visit the Tesco Superstore, with her vehicle fully occupied by her young kids.

Upon parking up, she cracked her door open for some relief from the warm weather – a decision that potentially saved all of their lives.

Mrs Whitley then saw a puff of smoke coming from the passenger’s side on the outside of the vehicle.

“The next second, the whole windscreen was full of flames,” she told the Lynn News.

The rest of the car’s doors immediately locked, leaving only the door Mrs Whitley had opened as a potential exit. Luckily, she and all four children – aged 12, eight, four and one – escaped to safety before the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames.

“It was just pure chance that I opened my door when I did,” she said.

“It was just pure luck.”

Firefighters soon arrived at the scene, managing to extinguish the blaze. The family, who live in Great Cressingham, emerged from the incident unscathed – but the burnt child’s seat in the back left a horrifying image of what could have been.

Mrs Whitley says that her two older children have been suffering with nightmares since the fire – but that her husband has been “brilliant” in supporting them throughout the past week.
