South West Norfolk MP Terry Jermy admits ‘serious issues’ surrounding fuel schemes after meeting with Fenland and West Norfolk Friends of the Earth

An MP has admitted there is a “serious issue” surrounding fuel schemes after meeting with a community group.

South West Norfolk MP Terry Jermy visited the Fenland and West Norfolk Friends of the Earth Group to discuss the “urgent action” needed to make sure residents stay warm this winter.

The group pointed out that many in the constituency are unaware of existing schemes designed to provide fully-funded, energy-efficient home improvement grants for those in most need.

Brenda Kent, co-ordinator of the group, said: “Insulating our homes and reducing our heating bills will benefit everyone.

“Not only would it help those whose homes would then be warmer and healthier, it would also reduce carbon emissions, benefiting the planet and improving life for people and nature.”

The group added that even if a household is eligible for these grants, finding someone qualified and available to install the improvements can be difficult.

Mr Jermy agreed this is a serious issue which needs urgent government action, and said there are multiple barriers to ensuring that people living on low incomes and in cold homes get help.

He acknowledged that fuel poverty is a significant concern in areas like South West Norfolk, and confirmed his intention to continue to work on the issue.

“We are very pleased to have had such a positive forward-thinking meeting with Terry and look forward to hearing back from him on issues raised,” Ms Kent added.

“The group is now committed to working with the MP as well as the borough council to make sure that future schemes are given enough funding to make it accessible to users.”
