Mystery as popular path is blocked by tree branches in Swaffham

Walkers were dismayed to find out that a route had been blocked by tree branches being piled up underneath a railway bridge.

Robert Wingfield, of Spinners Lane, came across the blockage at Long Lane last Thursday. It used to be the Swaffham to Thetford branch rail line before its closure.

Mr Wingfield said: “This has been a pleasant walkway for dog owners and ramblers, but now has been blocked off.

“Worse, when approaching the bridge, extra roots and branches have been wedged in, so that one cannot even safely climb up the bridge to get past it.”

He added that there are no notices about private land and the hedges have also been blocked on both sides by the bridge.

Mr Wingfield added: “There was talk at one time of developing somewhere around here for housing, but the focus now seems to be on land off Brandon Road.

“Is this just a farmer overstepping the mark, or something more sinister by the developers?”

A check round of local landowners by the Lynn News failed to find anyone who said they knew anything about how the tree branches came to be placed in the tunnel.
