New artwork celebrating West Norfolk village unveiled by mayor

A village hall has been brightened up thanks to a new wall hanging which was unveiled last week.

The Nordelph Arts and Crafts group created the new decoration, which celebrates the things they love about the village.

The artwork, which incorporates knitted, sewn and painted patches of fabric, was unveiled by Downham mayor Becky Hayes on Saturday afternoon.

Susan Venn, treasurer of the group, said: “We decided, as we all come from Nordelph, to show things that are always in Nordelph, like beautiful skies, the mill, the creek, the farms, and of course the church – which isn’t there now unfortunately – but it was all the things that mean something to us.”

The group proved age is just a number, as two members of the group who are in their 90s, Muriel and Joy, both contributed to the artwork.

“Each square was very individual, but it made a nice whole,” Mrs Venn added.

The decoration, which took about six months to create, now hangs in the room which the group meets in every other Wednesday from 2pm.

The unveiling also provided an opportunity to fundraise for the hall, which is in “desperate” need of funds, and is available to hire out.

Mrs Venn said the day raised £230, from three different stalls, including one from youth group Fensong.

Mrs Venn added: “We really appreciated the fact that the mayoress came along and it was her first unveiling, so she was quite pleased as well.”
