New awards to be held in Downham Market this year recognising town's heroes
Unsung heroes in the Downham area will be recognised this year at a new awards ceremony in the town.
The Local Heroes Awards, hosted by Downham Market Town Council and sponsored by The Downham Tandoori, will be held in the Town Hall on May 31.
A spokeswoman for the council said: “It is aimed at recognising all those people who contribute to making the town a vibrant, caring and sustainable place to live, but who generally do so without public accolade.
“You may know someone who ‘just gets on with things’ or who runs a club or activity to benefit those who otherwise would miss out.
“A good neighbour perhaps or someone working to make the town more environmentally friendly.”
Voting details will soon be available around the town, and in the Lynn News – which is a media partner of the awards – so residents are asked to get thinking about who deserves an award to help let them know how much they are appreciated.
The town council is also currently seeking businesses and organisations to sponsor individual awards.
The council spokeswoman said: “There may be a category that reflects your area of interest and for a very modest donation you will benefit from inclusion in the event brochure, your name on the trophy and publicity on the night.
“You will also be invited to attend and present the trophy.”
The award categories will be:
- Young Volunteer of the Year
- Volunteer of the Year
- Young Carer of the Year
- Carer of the Year
- Local Charity of the Year
- Environmental Award
- Sports Club of the Year
- Young Sports Person of the Year
- Sports Person of the Year
- Overcoming adversity award
- Neighbour of the Year
The judging panel will pick one winner from all the winners to take the overall ‘Downham Market Local Hero’ award.
The award ceremony itself is being sponsored by The Downham Tandoori, which is on the town’s High Street.
If you or your business would like to sponsor an award category, get in touch with the town council by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
