The question of rebuilding the village hall has caused controversy, and Mr Thornalley stated of the issue: "It will be open to the parish, if they want it or not. It will be a decision for the parish.

"There will be a referendum going into the village, hopefully within the next few months.

"I was born in the village and have lived there all my life. I'm of retiring age and I feel privileged that the people have elected me, and will do my best.

"I will listen if anyone wants to talk. I want to work with everyone."

The first-time parish councillor praised his opponent, adding: "I've got great respect for the other candidate.

"She has got some wonderful ideas, and it would be nice in the future if we could work together."
