New leader poised to take over West Norfolk Council

West Norfolk Council is set to come under new leadership next week after its ruling Conservative group named a new leader.

Stuart Dark has been named as the Tories' new group leader this afternoon, replacing Brian Long who has been in the role for the last five years.

Mr Dark, who is currently the authority's cabinet member for environmental services and public protection, is expected to formally take over as council leader at its annual meeting next Thursday.

And, in a statement released a short time ago, he insisted Mr Long would still be a key figure in the council's affairs.

He said: "Brian is a very well respected member of the group and a well respected member of the borough and county council.

"I am looking forward to taking on this role and know that I will be heavily relying on his knowledge and experience."

It is understood the Tories chose Mr Dark at a group meeting last night.

Mr Dark, a former police officer, was first appointed to the council's Cabinet in April last year, as part of the authority's response to the coronavirus crisis.

In October, he was awarded an MBE in the delayed Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to the community in Snettisham.

And Mr Long, who succeeded Nick Daubney in 2016, said the new leader had demonstrated his capabilities in response to the pandemic.

He said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Leader of the borough council and group leader and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved in that time, not least of which providing much needed housing across the borough, dealing with challenging budgetary pressures, Brexit and of course responding to the national pandemic that has impacted on so many people and businesses.

"The time is right for a new leader to continue our direction of travel and to help shape the future of West Norfolk in this new post-pandemic environment.

"I invited Stuart to join the Cabinet specifically because of his background in emergency response, and he has proven himself in the way he has guided us through this pandemic.

"He has a wealth of experience that will serve him well in this role."

Details of appointments to Mr Dark's new administration are due to be released at the annual meeting.
