During the meeting, Mr Sharman proposed a vote of thanks to the last mayor and mayoress for their efforts during the term of office and for representing the town throughout the year.

He said Mr Daymond had "always been ready to accept any request on his time to represent the town and council in both Downham and the local area".

"Mr Daymond put his heart and soul into the tenure of office," he added.

The meeting also saw John Doyle elected as the new deputy mayor, taking on the role from Yvonne Thompson.
