Upwell pupils' excitement at new play equipment
Fun and fitness are the buzzwords for children at Upwell Academy since the arrival of new play and gym equipment.
An outdoor gym was set up several months ago and there was real excitement this week when play equipment was set up for the younger children.
They have been without play equipment for some time since the old structure was deemed rotten and unsafe.
Now they have four new pieces of equipment including a tunnel, climbing wall, mound and balance kit designed to improve motor skills and co-ordination and add an extra element of fun to the school day.
School principal, Heidee Norman, said it has been funded by the school and also includes a new textured rubber ground covering to replace the bark.
“It will be usable all year round,” she said. “It is primarily for Key Stage One and reception classes and everyone was very excited when it arrived. They love it.”
She said that some of the older children were tempted to try it out and admitted: “Actually I had a go on the climbing wall!”
She said that the play equipment, together with the outdoor gym, which includes cycles and a cross-trainer, play an important role in the school's aim to keep the children physically fit and active in a way that was lost during lockdown.
