Norfolk library appeal for donations for 16-17 year olds in care

All 47 libraries across Norfolk are appealing to the community for donations, following a new initiative for 16- to 1- year-olds in care.

Every year at Christmas, the libraries choose a cause to champion.

Downham’s library manager Fran Valentine says: “This year is a very special and worthy cause that focuses on an often ignored group.

“It’s a very hard time for this age, especially at Christmas.

“A lot of teens in care feel vulnerable and isolated and they won’t always get to see their families at this time.

“We are all really behind this new project it’s really fantastic.

“We really want to make their day special and put a smile on their faces.”

Downham library and others have already received a lot of donations- that includes; fragrance sets, big name brand vouchers and more.

Fran said: “We want things that teenagers would like, apart from potentially dangerous items like candles for example.

“A lot of the donations we received initially were predominantly female orientated so it would be nice to see some stuff for the lads as well.

“Donations are accepted at any Norfolk library.”

According to the local authority, figures for LAC’s (looked after children) has increased from 1073 in 2015 to 1188 currently, which is the highest figure in four years.

According to the NFA website, a charity that deals with foster agencies, advice for foster parents and more said that: “Happy memories of Christmases spent with their birth family can often trigger behavioural changes in children, while the fact that it’s such a big event on the calendar could emphasise the loss they might feel about being away from their parents and siblings.

“It’s all too easy to get wrapped up in the fun and happiness of Christmas, and forget that, for others, the season isn’t necessarily a joyful one.

“Young people in care can grow indifferent towards Christmas because of past failures, disappointment and upsets.”

The gifts will be presented just before Christmas, however the deadline for donations is December 10.
