Old butcher’s in Methwold could be transformed into a home if plans are approved
A former village butcher’s could be transformed into a home in a bid to prevent it “falling into disrepair or becoming neglected”.
Daniel Reed has submitted a planning application which, if approved, would see the Methwold Old Butcher’s Shop have its use changed to a one-bedroom property.
The proposals for the High Street building, which is within the Methwold Conservation Area, will soon go out for consultation.
The butcher’s shop has been vacant for some time now, and is classed as a non-designated heritage asset.
A heritage statement prepared by Planning by Design on behalf of Mr Reed says that there would only be minor changes to the exterior of the building, such as window changes, a roof material change, and the addition of a rear roof light.
The previous old window would also be reinstated in the place of the existing black door.
The statement says: “The works proposed through this application would have no detrimental material impact on the significance of the building or Conservation Area.
“Additionally, from the attached architectural drawings included within the application it can clearly be seen that the development is of a high-quality and tasteful design, sympathetic to the character of the building and area.
“By altering the usage of the vacant (old butcher shop) building to a dwelling, the proposal will ensure that the building is returned to active use, which will prevent it from remaining vacant, and falling into disrepair or becoming neglected.
“Vacant buildings are more susceptible to deterioration and damage, which can negatively impact their historic fabric. By introducing a new use, such as a dwelling, the building is revitalised, and its maintenance and preservation become more viable.”
The planning application was submitted in late March, and was validated by West Norfolk Council yesterday.
It will now go out for consultation before planning officers begin to put together their recommendations on whether it should be approved.
