One-day nature festival at Wild Ken Hill, Snettisham

A one-day nature festival will be happening at Wild Ken Hill, the nature reserve in Snettisham this September.

The event will celebrate the natural world on Saturday, September 17 and is called Gathering, which will host authors, food and drink, guided tours and well being activities such as yoga and massages.

Well-known writers, authors, speakers and creatives will enthral, entertain and inspire the audiences about the natural world, through vibrant discussion, Q&A, readings, workshops and performances.

Dominic Buscall, project manager at Wild Ken Hill said: "We hope Gathering will give our visitors unforgettable experiences in nature which have a lasting impact and foster greater connection with the natural world.

"At Wild Ken Hill we have always been committed to engaging audiences about farming in nature, hoping to inspire audiences to help address our biodiversity and nature crises. Gathering is the next step on that journey; we hope it will be an inspiring, fun, and thought-provoking day."

Environmentalist, broadcaster, and writer Mary Colwell will talk to her work with Curlew, Britain’s most endangered wading bird, which is being conserved at Wild Ken Hill through a headstarting project.

Ruth Dillon, director of Gathering said: "I am so excited to be directing Gathering at Wild Ken Hill. The day is going to be hugely inspiring, with an incredible programme of leading authors, practitioners, and creatives."

Benedict Macdonald, author of Rebirding and forthcoming Cornerstones, will join Tony Juniper, chairman of Natural England in discussion on nature recovery in the UK.

Biologist turned naturalist and writer Dr Amy-Jane Beer will speak to her forthcoming book The Flow and lead a walk into the Wild Ken Hill woods.

Gathering will cover a broad spectrum of themes from rewilding and food production to wellbeing and creativity, all examined and celebrated in Wild Ken Hill meadows and woodlands with views of the coast.

Large canvas tents will host keynote discussions and performances. For example, author Sarah Langford will chair a discussion on the future of food and farming featuring farmers such as Helen Browning, chairman of the Soil Association and food entrepreneur and farmer William Kendall.

Smaller tents around Gathering will provide more intimate spaces for readings, workshops, film-viewing, and other experiences in nature.

Other participants will include conservationist and authors Lee Schofield and Nick Acheson, Rebecca Schiller, author, journalist, and campaigner, and Jake Fiennes.

Gathering will feature a selection of guided tours into woodlands and beaver habitat across Wild Ken Hill, available throughout the day.

There will also be expert workshops, such as creating writing in nature with author Nicola Chester, and a wellbeing offering comprising yoga, meditation, sound baths, massages and sauna.

Families can enjoy activities in a general children’s area, as well as booking onto sessions at Little WILDlings Forest School, where children are given the freedom to explore and play in the woods..

A selection of local food and drink vendors will serve Sri Lankan dishes, sourdough pizza, Hawaii-inspired poke, flatbreads, and there will also be coffee and bars.

Pensthorpe Natural Park, Rewilding Britain, and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, will all also have a presence at Gathering, focusing on areas where they have collaborated with Wild Ken Hill, for example on the ongoing national curlew headstarting project.

Gathering will run from 9am until 9pm with events and activities happening throughout the day and it will be accessible by car, cycle, and public transport.

Tickets are priced at £55 for Adults, £30 for Young Adults, and are free for children, 11 years old and under and will go on sale on 9am tomorrow.
