Have your say

Let’s start off the New Year with photography and crafts, pursuits not given as much space in the column as, perhaps, I would like!

I have been in touch with Tracey Robinson and she tells me great things about her Lynn Photography Group and her Craft Club. It seems to me if you like the sound of getting involved and learning more about the world of cameras and crafts, joining one of these groups in the New Year is just the thing for you! With a friendly atmosphere and refreshments thrown in I think you could be on to a winner.

One can start from basics, and progress, so I will now give you details of how to learn a bit more. The photography group meets fortnightly and The Craft Club monthly (on the last Friday of the month) . Fees seem very reasonable to me and so I suggest you visit the respective websites in time to join or phone Tracey Robinson direct on 01553 760121.

The websites are and : www.craftsjustfor

There is plenty to do, so why not get involved ? Venues are local; what could be better for the New Year?

If you prefer a good book these winter evenings, members of Waterstones Book Club are reading a short book by Ernest Hemingway describing his younger years spent for a time in Paris. His way of life and the people he met, mainly from the art and literature set of the time make fascinating reading. When done, pop over to the meeting to discuss your verdict. That takes place at the Lynn store on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 27, at 4pm. Teas, coffees and biscuits will, no doubt ,be available! The book, by the way, is A Moveable Feast!

My ‘panto plug’ this week is for Downham Amateur Dramatic Society’s production of Sleeping Beauties being presented at Downham Market Town Hall between Friday, January 15 and Sunday, January 17. Shows are at 7.30pm on the Friday and Saturday and matinees on the Saturday and Sunday starting at 2.30pm. Sounds great fun. Visit The DADS website for details. Perhaps, also, you would like to join the group? New Year, new start?

I always like to promote local libraries as readers will know. There is plenty going on at Gaywood Library currently, but perhaps you would consider becoming a friend of the library? For those interested why not go along to a special event taking place at the library on the morning of Friday, January 29, between 10.30am and midday ?Entry is free and you should call on 01553 768498 for more details.

Don’t forget you should also check the Lynn News ‘listings section’ for weekly details of what’s happening at Lynn, Dersingham, Downham, Swaffham, Gaywood and Hunstanton libraries.

Talk of film last week reminds me to mention a live screening of the Royal Ballet’s production of Frederick Ashton’s double bill of The Two Pigeons and Rhapsody. Tuesday, January 26, is the day and 7.15 pm the time at Lynn’s Majestic Cinema, so don’t be late for curtain up. For all screenings, find details on the website, as well as for feature films. I, for one, am looking forward to the latest Quentin Tarantino film The Hateful Eight.

Don’t forget to take a look at what King’s Lynn Music Society and Arts and Sciences are putting in their programmes, and tea and music Sunday afternoon soirées at The Minster Vicarage most months

Lastly, a visit to Peckover House and Gardens in Wisbech is always a pleasure. An event enabling one to create a bird sculpture will be held between 10am and 4pm on Thursday, January 14. Call on 01945 583463 for more information.
